Mycelium Signal #27: “ZONE Documentary Special Episode” – With Dr. Martin Locker
The ZONE documentary tells the story of the esoteric Bermuda Triangle of the French Pyrenees, which covers the villages of Rennes-le-Château, Bugarach, Rennes-les-Bains, and Montségur. This small area of ancient Occitania, known among locals as the Zone, the Golden Triangle, or the Devil’s Chessboard, conceals countless mysteries and conspiracy theories ranging from Jesus’s secret bloodlines and hidden treasures to the Knights Templar, the Holy Grail, and Cathar initiation caves. For centuries, the area has attracted truth-seekers, eccentric occultists, and New Age movements seeking Europe’s ancient spirituality.
The documentary weaves an esoteric spider web from local residents’ and spiritual seekers’ stories, merging with the dreamlike landscapes of the French Pyrenees. ZONE is a journey into the invisible world, where magic and mythical legends become tangible reality, and space-time distortions blur the boundaries between fiction and reality. The film’s hallucinatory soundscape was created by Paavoharju band’s Lauri Ainala, Petoluonto, Pyre: Numen, Novitshok, and Kali Ensemble.
My guest for this episode is Dr. Martin Locker from the Perennial Pyrenees project. He is a trained archaeologist and researcher living in Andorra with over a decade’s experience in the discipline. Dr. Locker’s work has been published in several journals and books. Outside of archaeology, Dr. Locker has long held a fascination for cultural heritage, mountainous places, and all things rustic. In this interview, we cover Martin’s thoughts on the Zone as a liminal space and its eccentric denizens, Cathars, the German medievalist Otto Rahn, among other related topics.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a continuation of the first episode, recorded in Finnish with the makers of the ZONE documentary, Boris Brander and Juho Aittanen, respectively.
